Technology: A Flaw in the Society of Today

Technology--the advancements in our society that make our lives easier.
Every new invention creates a life that is simpler and simpler, making some, normal everyday actions a thing of the past. But does technology have such a strong hold on us that our lives truly revolve around it and we actually depend on it? The answer is yes. Is this a bad thing? Once again, yes. Is technology affecting the generation of today, my generation? Absolutely. Teens of today’s actions, feelings and characteristics are all based on technology. This generation is lazy, spoiled, and ungrateful, solely due to the fact that technology is taking over our world.
One major, constant characteristic seen in teens today is the tendency to be lazy. Laziness seems to be the outcome of a world that is so technologically advanced. From the new phones, to the new computers, even to the advancement of television and TV shows, kids are more inclined to be inactive. They use technology instead of accomplishing tasks that need to be done. Take for example, Facebook, which is a world wide phenomenon. Teens of my generation are more likely to stay inside on their computer searching Facebook, than going outside, getting a job, completing homework, or even simply helping out around the house. Literally anything is a click away in the hi-tech world of today and teens can get any piece of information effortlessly. Thus, they expect everything to be handed to them. In turn teens do not work hard for what they want, they are lazy, and expect everything to be handed to them.
“I want this, I want that!”, “Give me, give me, give me!” and “It’s all about me!”, are three sentences, or demands, that are so clearly shown in my generation, that every teen could bluntly be screaming it too the world at this very moment. Technology plays a big role in this issue too. What do kids of this generation want? Most teens of today want the new, most advance form of technology out there. Friends pressure kids to get these new forms of technology and there is a competition to get the best and the coolest new item. Teens of today are ungrateful once they get the new item because they feel that they deserve it, because everyone else they know has one too. They feel like it is a right not a privilege to own a new form of technology. Since new improved technology is coming out rapidly, once kids get a piece of technology, they just want a new one in a month or two when something better comes along.
Television can influence kids in a negative manor and further make kids spoiled and ungrateful for what they have and what they receive. What they see on TV makes them think that they should have what everyone on the shows have, whether its clothes, cars, or other hip things. Celebrities also contort the outlook of and make them think that they should also have what all the celebrities the have, even though most of the celebrities are millionaires. This doesn’t seem reasonable because kids strive to have what people with so much more money than them have. TV and celebrities twist teens outlook on reality and make them think that it is normal to have all the objects and material goods, and that teens should have all those material goods for themselves, because everyone else has them. Once the teens of this generation get what they want they are not appreciative of it because they think it is normal, and it’s no big deal. This also makes teens more interested in material goods, and what they have then what really matters in life.
I am not my generation. I do get drawn into the chaos once in a while, but I don’t feel that I should be grouped with my generation. I’m not saying I am perfect or that I’m above everyone in my generation, because I’m not. I do get distracted by technology, but it doesn’t make me lazy. It is distracting sometimes when I’m on the computer completing homework, to go on Facebook and talk to my friends, but I refuse to be pulled into the trap, and I end up completing what I need to complete. I do want the new items of technology, but I remain grateful when I get it and don’t ask for the newest things when they first come out because I know that a better thing will come out in a few months. As for what I see on TV, I know that it’s not reality and that there are more important things in life than material goods and that if all we strive for is to get these material things than we are missing out on many other things that life offers. I don’t want to be generalized into my generation because even though the majority is lazy, spoiled and ungrateful, the minority contains many people that are the complete opposite.
Since the technology of today is affecting the teens of today so negatively it will definitely affect the world of tomorrow. The laziness of my generation is hard to ignore. Since everything is so simple because of technology, my generation will expect every other aspect of life to be that simple too. They will want things handed to them and won’t work as hard for what they want. In the long run when the teens of my generation are older and have jobs there is a good chance that they will be lazy in their work. Since teens of today are spoiled, when they are older it is likely that they will spoil their own children. Technology will truly ruin my generation and the upcoming generations making them lazy, hardworking and spoiled.

The Know-It-All

Fondue

I know what fondue is, but I never really knew how much time went into preparing a little melting pot of cheese. From the white wine being heated in a heavy casserole, to the grated cheese and adding cornstarch and flavoring; too much is done to make a gross bubbling pot of cheese. Nevermind the fact that you dip cubes of "crusty bread" into this mixture "comunally" Also if the "delicious" crusty bread isn't enough, the crust that remains at the bottom is divided equally among the other diners. Fondue would make any gathering a party!!

What is good writing?

"Good" writing is the ability of a work to suggest a topic and make an opinion on that topic in a way that the reader will want to agree with what the writing is about. "Good" writing has commentary but also has concrete details to back up those comments, which will further allow the author to argue their topic, and support their ideas. Also a good organization of ideas within the writing makes a piece "good" because it will allow the reader to follow exactly what the author is thinking. Logically, "good" writing is clean of grammatical and spelling errors, because with these errors the reader might get bogged down in them and not be able to concentrate on the main point of the work. The point of writing is to suggest an opinion on a particular comment and good writing does this effectively so that the reader will agree with what the opinion is.

The Dozen

My Top Twelve Vacations

12. New Hampshire- When I was very young my family took a trip to New Hampshire and visited Santa’s Village every year. You might ask why a Christmas-themed village would be amusing, however, back then my sisters and I thought that it was one of the most entertaining places we had ever witnessed. From the talking reindeer, to the elves, and Santa, we never could get enough. For that reason, we would anxiously await until the next year to return to our favorite little village.
11. Hershey Park, Pennsylvania- I remember when we went to Hershey Park. It was a big deal for me because it was my first long car ride. My family went with another family, although, both of the moms refused to come because they were both afraid of rollercoasters. We spent three days going to Hershey Park and we went on every single ride there, multiple times. This was very enjoyable for me because I absolutely love roller coasters and chocolate, so it was a combination to die for!
10. Mt. Washington- Three summers in a row I have hiked up Mt. Washington with my friends. Even though to most this might not seem like a vacation, to me it was. The first time I was invited to hike up the mountain I was skeptical that I would be able to hike up without electricity and makeup. To my surprise, once I went, I found out how truly fun it was and how rewarding it was once I made it to the top. When my friend asked me to go again, I said yes right away without even thinking. Now I hope we go again this summer because it truly was an adventure for me.
9. Newport, RI- Our friends own a house in Newport, Rhode Island and they invited my family and two other families to travel down one summer. This vacation was memorable because we tried to fit about twenty people in a pretty small house. Not only was that fun to watch but the amount of space we took up on the beach was funny too. I liked this vacation because I was with so many kids that we always had something to do and we were always busy.
8. Disney World- Three years in a row my family traveled to Disney World when my sisters and I were younger. The first time we went I celebrated my fifth birthday there and I thought it was the coolest thing. I loved seeing all the princesses and Mickey and Minnie Mouse. This is a very memorable vacation because it was my first vacation that I took where I rode on an airplane. Even though I was very young when my family went, I will never forget this vacation, and will always treasure the memories made there.
7. Orlando, Florida- Many years ago my family went to Orlando Florida. We stayed in a hotel right across the street from Universal Studios. Since I am a big fanatic of roller coasters, I enjoyed myself on all the rides there. One of my preferred roller coasters was the gigantic, mean, green Hulk rollercoaster. The thrill of being on the ride was like nothing I had ever experienced before. From the wind in my hair, to being tossed from side to side, and having my stomach drop, I couldn’t resist from going back for more each time it ended. All in all this was a fantastic vacation full of adventure and roller coasters.
6. Cape Cod- Every summer my family goes down to our cottage down the Cape. I love the Cape in the summer because it lets me escape to what feels like a different world from the world back home. My cottage is in a community where everyone knows everyone, and so it has a very homey feel to it. I have friends down the Cape who are very fun to be with and it is nice to see them every summer. We enjoy our lazy summer days on the beach and nights at The Market Place, which is a place in our neighborhood which we enjoy traveling to every night, for ice cream, pizza and candy. This is not the healthiest food to eat, except it’s the summer and no one really minds.
5. Clearwater, Florida- Once my family bought a condo down in Florida, we have been too many times to count. From our house we can see Tampa Bay and the striking Gulf of Mexico. Our beach across the street is very private and peaceful, and sometimes we go to the hotels and use their pools, because we like the change of scenery from our pool and the adventure. Every time we go we get to ride jet skis. When I ride on the jet skis it is very exhilarating because I love speed and I get so much satisfaction from driving as fast as I can go, and from fact that I scare my mom half to death. I love traveling down to Florida because every time we go it never gets old.
4. Bermuda- When I was in third grade my family took a cruise to Bermuda. Not only was Bermuda gorgeous with its vibrant-colored houses and pink-sanded beaches, but the cruise to it was also amusing. This was my first and only cruise; nevertheless everything about it was unforgettable. From being able to swim on deck, to the children’s club where I made many friends, I never got bored. This trip was full of new exciting adventures and things I never experienced before. The only thing that wasn’t so great was the sea sickness that many people on the ship got.
3. Road Trip to Florida- Last April vacation, my mom, her friend, and my three best friends took a road trip down to Florida. This was a daring vacation because only one of the six of us had done it before. It was a long, tiring trip, and the worst part of it was having to stay in a scary hotel in North Carolina. In the end it was worth it because we finally made it to Florida and I was with my three best friends. We enjoyed ourselves very much and had a lot of laughs along the way. We went parasailing, and that was a first for all of us. This made extremely hilarious memories for me and my friends, but once we had to leave we weren’t very thrilled because not only were we leaving Florida behind, but we also had a long ride ahead of us to get home.
2. Aruba- My family and I just got back from this trip about a week ago. This vacation was one of the most relaxing trips I have ever taken. Since we went right after finals, it was nice not to worry about school, homework, or reality. During the day we spent our time laying out soaking up the sun, and sipping virgin piƱa coladas. We swam in the calm, bright blue waters of the Caribbean, and floated in the pool of our hotel. At night we spent time going to restaurants and exploring the island (not that there was much to explore; the island is very small). Aruba was a very fun vacation where all my stress disappeared, until I had to return to reality. But I still held the wonderful memories of the trip and a sun burn, which reminded me of all the fun I had on my second favorite vacation.
1. The Bahamas- When my family and I traveled to the Bahamas about a year ago, I never expected how much I would truly enjoy myself on the trip. We stayed in the Atlantis resort, which was a very creative and unique hotel. The luminescent, dazzling aqua and green water and the private beach we went to was a main point of my enjoyment. Not only was this a calming vacation, but it was also filled with adventure, too. The slides and water rides kicked up the excitement of the trip and made it truly electrifying. We also got to go snorkeling, and even though I am scared of fish, I ended up really having the time of my life. Some day I hope to go back and once again experience what made this my favorite place in the whole entire world.
